Who can volunteer?
There are two types of MRC volunteers.
Medical and health care professionals from all health occupations to include practicing, non-practicing, and retired. These volunteers include:
- Physicians
- Physician Assistants
- Nurse Practitioners
- Nurses (RN's and LPN's)
- Nurses Aides
- Pharmacists
- Mental Health professional
- Veterinarians
- Other allied health professionals
Non-Medical volunteers are essential to the emergency health care and disaster response. All community members could be used depending on the type of event the MRC is responding to. Support volunteers include:
- Administrative staff
- Educators
- Public health officials
- Clergy
- Mortuary professionals
- Environmental engineers
- Construction workers
- Interpreters
- Many others
What area does the Western Tidewater and NE North Carolina unit cover?
The unit is responsible for responding to the needs of:
City of Suffolk, VA
City of Franklin, VA
Southampton County, VA
Isle of Wight County, VA
Hertford County, NC
Gates County, NC
Benefits of Volunteering
- Receive priority vaccination/medication during a health emergency
- Free training
- Hands on drills and exercises
- Disaster and emergency response preparedness

Requirements for Volunteers
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must be available to respond in case of health emergency or disaster
- Must attend orientation session
- Must be willing to submit to a background check
